SUMMER OIL PAINTING COURSES 2025

I realize that many people will be disappointed by the cancellation of Marlborough Summer School. I am going to offer exactly the same courses I had planned, but they will be based in Bourton Village Hall SN6 8JA just north of the M4, junction 14 on the Marlborough to Cirencester road.Five days tuition 10.00– 4.30 with an hour to buy and eat lunch in a local café/deli ( or bring a sandwich) .

The courses cost  £450 with all materials and equipment provided.

WEEK 1 PAINT LIKE KLIMT in oils

Monday July 7th— Friday July 11th

On this course you will make a  study of a portrait, a landscape and a typical Klimt symbolist painting.

All will be highly decorative images. I will also show you some of the technical features in Klimt’s paintings that you would not necessarily notice by yourself.

I have run this course very successfully in Marlborough on two occasions, participants had an enjoyable time and the images above are of students finished work.

Some experience painting is needed but you will be shown step by step how to proceed with each of the paintings.

WEEK 2 TECHNIQUES FOR OIL PAINTERS

Monday July 14th— Friday July 18th

This has, for many years, been my most popular course at Summer School.

You will make five oil paintings in five days to learn several tried and trusted,

but rarely taught methods of making successful oil paintings. Great for painters

in watercolour or acrylics but with limited or no experience with oil paint.

All materials are provided.

The work is ambitious but you will be shown step by step how to make amazing progress.

You will not discover these things by accident, you have to be taught them.

You will paint a traditional landscape, a sunset, a portrait, a classical , and a more contemporary still life.

WEEK 3 GARDEN PAINTINGS USING GLAZE TECHNIQUES

Monday July 21st— Friday July 25th

Making full use of five days, this course is about using

glazes to add depth of colour and randomization.

Your work will look more sophisticated, possibly more

realistic, and less “coloured in”.

Old master techniques used for contemporary paintings.
