OIL GLAZING COURSE

This is a two-day course in oil glazing. you will need to attend BOTH days..

Bourton Village Hall, SN6 8HZ

Friday 15th and Thursday 21st November 2014. 10.00- 4.30 with an hour for lunch so that you can visit a local deli cafe in Shrivenham.

You will make two finished paintings in oil paint. You do not need to have had much experience using oil paint and I will provide everything that you need. I will demonstrate each step of the process and show you how the use of glazes can make your paintings more exciting. Glazes add depth to colours and make the images glow. If your painting is very precise and detailed, this is a good way to free up your process and work with chance elements. Being able to use glazes will give you an edge over the painters who do not understand how fantastic they look, and surprisingly easy they are to use.

Please contact me if you have any questions, or want to book a place.

COURSES IN OIL PAINTING

Paul will run courses in oil painting throughout 2024. Based in Bourton Village Hall, SN6 8JA, just north of the M4 junction 15.

I can arrange courses on dates to suit you. I need three or more participants to make a course viable.

Message me to discuss ideas and give me dates that suit you. Two day courses are ideal, but they do not have to be consecutive days. Weekdays or weekends are bot possible.

I can then advertise the dates and hopefully recruit more participants. Or if you have a group of three or more and want to keep it exclusive that is also possible.

I find that this works better than inventing dates that seldom fit peoples diaries, and it avoids me having to cancel advertised courses.

All courses cost £115 per day and all materials are included.

PAINTING FOR BEGINNERS

My beginners courses are for absolute beginners and those new to oils. You will not come on a beginners course and find it full of people who are obviously a bit more experienced. I run separate courses for people who want more supervised painting but who know the basics.

Two day courses will run from 10.00 - 4.30 with a break for lunch in a local deli/cafe.

Small groups ( Max 10 ) will ensure that you get the help and instruction that you need to make good progress.

The courses are perfect for painters of little experience using oil paints, who want to improve or be shown new methods or taught traditional skills. There are courses specifically for complete beginners. All materials and equipment are supplied. Occasional three day courses for those with more experience are used to tackle complicated subjects. I will respond to requests as far as possible and tailor sessions to suit you.

Oil painting has a reputation for being smelly, messy, slow to dry and difficult to use. These courses will show you that none of that is necessarily true.

The courses are led by artist and tutor Paul Minter BA PGCE OAS who has taught highly regarded courses at the Marlborough Summer School for many years and is an alumni and occasional tutor with the Norfolk Painting School.

“I know that, as on-line courses proliferate, it is becoming difficult to find courses with hands-on practical painting. My aim is to provide instruction that is challenging, but enjoyable and to tailor what I do to the needs of the group. There are aspects of successful painting in oils that you are very unlikely to discover by accident, you need to be taught the basics”

Bring your own paint and brushes if your prefer, but paints will be available. All necessities are provided, including odour- free solvents and mediums. Tea and Coffee are available all day, and there are options for lunch and accommodation in the near by village of Shrivenham ( 5 minutes drive).

GARDEN PAINTINGS

At the moment I am painting gardens and wilder landscapes. You can see these in the gallery section of this website.

Over two days we will look at different ways that these paintings can be approached.

I will explain what I paint, how I paint it, and most importantly the thinking behind the paintings.

We will work from reference photos of real places and you will make your own paintings. I will show you how the scenes can be edited and manipulated to make better paintings.

My painting below has been published as a greetings card by www.greenpebble.co.uk

It is by far my most popular card and outsells all the others combined.

ALL THE PAINTINGS ILLUSTRATED, UNLESS OTHERWISE CREDITED, WERE MADE BY STUDENTS ON MY COURSES IN 2023.

MERCER GALLERY OPEN

Three of my paintings have been accepted for the Mercer Open in Harrogate , North Yorkshire.

The exhibition runs from Sept 17th 2022- Jan 8th 2023

The paintings are; Castle Howard, drawing room. Felbrigg, dining room & Holkham, state bedroom.

Oxford Art Society

I am so happy to announce that I have been invited to join the Oxford Art Society. I am absolutely delighted as it was a goal I set myself and the first step in what I like to pretend is an actual plan.
